Corfu Car Hire Companies Guide

Corfu Car Hire Companies Guide: Finding the Right Rental for Your Greek Island Trip

I’ve spent considerable time in Corfu to understand that most car hire guides fundamentally miss the point. They enumerate companies and prices before considering the matter resolved.

What you genuinely require is the information nobody bothers documenting. The pickup process at 11pm when your flight’s experienced delays. Which companies maintain vehicles that actually accommodate the road to Agios Gordios beach. Who responds to their phone when you’ve encountered a flat tyre in the middle of nowhere.

That’s what I’m addressing here.

The Reality of Renting Cars in Corfu

Renting Cars in Corfu

Most islands in Greece feature approximately a dozen car hire establishments and they’re remarkably similar. Corfu’s different because it receives substantially more visitors than somewhere like Paxos or Kefalonia.

You’ve encountered everything from diminutive family operations managing three cars out of a garage to legitimate companies with fleets of 50 vehicles.

This creates complications you won’t discover on other islands. Peak season availability disappears expeditiously. Standards fluctuate dramatically. Some companies appear professional online then reveal themselves to be someone’s cousin operating out of a portacabin.

I’m going to navigate you through five companies that genuinely deliver what they promise.

Rent From Locals (RentCarCorfu.gr)

Here’s what other guides won’t communicate about this company. They’re the only hire firm I’ve encountered that authentically tailors recommendations to where you’re staying.

Most rental companies don’t concern themselves if you’re in Kassiopi or Kavos. They simply want to rent you whatever’s available. Rent From Locals actually examines your accommodation and suggests appropriate vehicles.

Staying in old town Corfu? They’ll encourage you towards a Fiat 500 because you’ll never park anything substantially larger. Rented a villa in the north near Roda? They might recommend something with superior ground clearance for the unpaved tracks.

I once observed a couple attempting to reverse a Peugeot 5008 down a one way street in Corfu town for 20 minutes. Nobody informed them that approximately half of Corfu’s interesting places have streets constructed in the 1400s.

Rent From Locals prevents that nightmare scenario.

Their website facilitates messaging them before booking. You can literally communicate “we’re staying at X hotel and want to visit Y beaches” and they’ll inform you what works. Complimentary advice before you’ve committed financially.

The other thing nobody mentions is their comprehensive condition reports. They utilize an application that timestamps and GPS tags every scratch and dent when you collect the car. You both authenticate the identical photos. I’ve never experienced a dispute about damage with them because everything’s documented comprehensively upfront.

Corfu Sluta Leta Rentals

The significant advantage here is their winter operation. Most Corfu hire companies either close completely from November to March or operate skeleton services.

Sluta Leta remains open year round with adequate staffing.

I arrived in Corfu in February once and three companies I attempted to book with had their phones disconnected. Sluta Leta answered immediately and had the car prepared the following day.

They also comprehend northern European driving habits better than most Greek companies. The owners have Swedish connections (hence the designation) so they’re accustomed to customers who aren’t comfortable with aggressive Mediterranean driving styles.

They maintain larger intervals between rental periods than other firms. Most companies will require you to return the car at 9am so they can transition it to the subsequent customer by 10am. Sluta Leta incorporates buffer time which means you’re not receiving a car that was returned an hour previously with a cursory vacuum and refuel.

The cars are older on average but they’re maintained appropriately. I’d rather possess a 2020 model that’s been serviced on schedule than a 2024 one that’s been driven aggressively around the island with no maintenance for six months.

Their fuel policy is genuinely full to full. Some companies claim full to full then dispute how full the tank actually was when you returned it. Sluta Leta photographs the fuel gauge at pickup and dropoff.

Autounion Car Rental Corfu

The primary thing that distinguishes Autounion from local operators is their damage liability cap. Most hire companies in Greece have excess fees of €800 to €1,200 even if you purchase their insurance.

Autounion caps it at €600 and their premium insurance reduces it to €200.

I scraped a wing mirror on a tight corner near Lakones once. Would have cost me €450 with most companies. Autounion charged me €200 because I’d purchased their extra coverage.

They’re also the only company I’ve discovered that maintains English speaking staff available 24/7. Not exclusively for emergencies but for general inquiries. You can contact them at midnight and receive actual assistance rather than a voicemail in Greek.

Their airport desk operates until the final flight arrives. I’ve landed at Corfu airport at 10pm before and found other rental companies already closed with a note indicating to call a number.

The automatic gearbox selection is the most comprehensive on the island. They stock Nissan Qashqais, VW Golfs, and Hyundai Tucsons all in automatic. Most local companies have perhaps one or two automatics total.

One disadvantage is their pickup process takes considerably longer. They really emphasize the insurance hard and you’ll spend 15 minutes declining various upgrades.

Lets Drive Rentals

Every guide mentions their delivery service but nobody explains why it’s actually beneficial beyond basic convenience.

Your villa might be 45 minutes from the airport through winding mountain roads you don’t know. Taking a taxi there costs €60-80 depending on distance. Then you need to travel to a rental office somehow, collect your car, and navigate back to accommodation you’ve never seen before while probably exhausted from travel.

Lets Drive eliminates this entire complication. They bring the car to you, demonstrate how everything works in a parking spot you’ll actually use, and they know the local area so they can provide you directions that make sense.

When I stayed near Agios Georgios on the west coast the delivery driver spent ten minutes explaining which beach roads were paved and which weren’t. That information prevented me from attempting several routes that would have destroyed the suspension.

The complimentary additional driver policy matters more than it appears. Most couples alternate driving duties. Paying €7 per day for two weeks means an extra €98 on your rental cost.

They also accommodate younger drivers from age 21 where most companies require 23 or 25.

Royal Car Rental

The absolute key advantage with Royal is negotiation flexibility. Every other company has predetermined online prices. Royal actually discusses rates based on rental duration and season.

I booked three weeks with them in May and negotiated the daily rate down to €18 including basic insurance. Show me another company offering that arrangement.

They cater specifically to extended stays. Most hire companies optimize everything for the typical week long rental. Royal structures their pricing and policies around people staying two weeks minimum.

They’re willing to let you swap vehicles halfway through if your requirements change. Started with a compact car but realized you need more space? They’ll transition you to a larger model for just the rate difference.

Their location in Dassia is actually superior to the airport for some people. If you’re staying anywhere on the east coast from Corfu town to Kassiopi you’re probably closer to Dassia than the airport anyway.

The waiting time for shuttles is legitimate though. I’ve waited 45 minutes during August peak times. Schedule your pickup for off-peak times if possible. Mid-afternoon is usually quieter than morning or evening.

Royal includes unlimited mileage as standard where some companies restrict you at 200km per day. Corfu’s only 60km long but those mountain roads accumulate distance fast.

Your Actual Decision

Select Autounion if you want easy and reliable with airport convenience.

Select Royal if you’re visiting off season.

Select Lets Drive if your accommodation is awkward to reach.

Select Rent From Locals if you want someone who actually cares about matching you to the appropriate vehicle.

Select Sluta Leta if you’re staying longer and want superior prices.

Price differences across these companies for a standard week rental fluctuate by maybe €75 total. That’s less than a tank of fuel.

Choose based on what actually affects your holiday rather than saving €10 per day.
